What will the future of railways look like?

Development and evolutions of moving-block train operations

On 23rd May, 2019, TU Delft and University of Birmingham co-organised a European workshop on train-centric railway signalling systems to discuss developments and evolutions of moving-block train operations.

programme outline and agenda

European workshop on train centric railway signalling systems

Representatives from professionals from all across Europe’s railway industry and academia were present and contributed to surveys to understand the general opinion that railway experts have on testing of moving block signalling and the applicability of Virtual Coupling for the different market segments identified by Shift2Rail.

The results from the survey and groups sessions serve to understand current state-of-the-art in railway signalling testing and define possible strategies that will lead towards zero-on-site testing of ETCS level 3 components.

About MOVINGRAIL

The project will bring forward innovative concepts of “moving-block” railway traffic operations by (1) advancing testing methods for ETCS Level 3 and (2) Analysing Virtual Coupling which will lead to convoys of automated trains under cooperative adaptive control.
